Zoheleth, meaning serpent, is the nickname given to the narrator of the story. As a child he is abused, then disinherited and abandoned by his exploitative guardian. A chance encounter leads to his being taken in as a servant by Absalom's family, and he grows up to become Absalom's confidant.
