Rethinking Adult ADHD Summary

Rethinking Adult ADHD: Helping Clients Turn Intentions Into Actions by J. Russell Ramsay

In Thinking Through Adult ADHD: Turning Intentions Into Actions, Dr. J. Russell Ramsay provides a first-of-its-kind exploration of the thoughts and beliefs of adults with ADHD and the role they play in psychosocial treatment. While negative thinking does not cause ADHD, cognitive strategies play a key role in managing and overcoming symptoms. Dr. Ramsay summarizes emerging research on negative thoughts and beliefs in adults with ADHD, with a focus on escape-avoidance coping patterns. He emphasizes a cognitive theme within a cognitive behavior therapy model for adult ADHD, and targets emotional, behavioral, and relationship problems for work in therapy. The book explores traditional cognitive change tactics and shows how they can be adapted to adult ADHD to foster the implementation of coping strategies and skills essential for patients, as well as related issues encountered in clinical practice.

This is one of the more important books I have seen in almost 2 decades of researching and treating adults with ADHD. Ramsay pairs a fascinating exploration of the research with brilliant clinical insights into the thoughts of patients with ADHD to identify proper assessment and treatment. I plan to recommend this book for my graduate-level course on cognitive therapy.
