Brownlie's Principles of Public International Law Summary

Brownlie's Principles of Public International Law by James Crawford (Whewell Professor of International Law, University of Cambridge Fellow of Jesus College, Cambridge Research Professor of Law, LaTrobe University)

This is the eighth edition of Sir Ian Brownlie's classic distillation of public international law. Serving as a single volume introduction to the field as a whole, the book seeks to present international law as a system that is based on, and helps structure, relations among states and other entities at the international level. It aims to identify the constituent elements of that system in a clear and accessible fashion. This edition, fully updated by James Crawford, Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge, continues to provide the balance, clarity and expertise expected from this classic text. Completely updated to take account of the many areas of expansion and development in international law which have occurred since earlier editions, all chapters have been reviewed and brought up to date. The eighth edition features a new introduction and the chapters on environmental law, immunities, responsibility, use of force, and high seas freedoms have been substantially rewritten. It remains an important textbook for students, undergraduate and graduate, treating core issues from a lawyer's perspective. It is also a vade mecum for practitioners desiring a solid footing on which to make further enquiries.

Brownlie's Principles of Public International Law Reviews

The overall verdict that this is a very impressive work, wide-ranging in scope and nuanced in content, just as one would expect from its eminent author... The combination in Crawford's Brownlie of the traditional structure with modern developments in theory and practice is a success, delivering what seems to be at the moment the best single-author English-language international law textbook. It is highly recommended, both as a student text and as a persuasive authority for the practice of international law. * Martins Paparinskis, International and Comparative Law Quarterly *
The excellence of these new editions of Brierly and Brownlie is unquestionable. Both student and hardened old-hand - and those in between - will find much in them that is challenging and memorable. This reflects the extraordinary abilities of both the original authors and the new editors. The books are also, as before, complementary (and will continue to be found as close companions on the library bookshelf). Anyone coming new to international law who reads both will acquire a rounded picture of the modern role and rules of public international law. Each is highly recommended, indeed essential for any law library. Given their competitive price, they are also suitable additions for any private collection of public international law books. * Omri Sender and Michael Wood, American Journal of International Law *
Crawford's Brownlie has remained in spirit loyal to the original. The sometimes very extensive updating and restructuring has made the work more readable and coherent, providing the reader a good sense of international law as a complex, but reasonably well-working 'system'. Its case-references and notes apparatus are excellent and the overall view it opens to early 21st century international law has an unparalleled combination of depth and width. Crawford's Brownlie is the most impressive English- language textbook available ... I still think that one cannot be a good professional without reading this book. * Martti Koskenniemi, British Yearbook of International Law *
