Summary

James Downey, one of the great Irish journalists of his time, describes his family history, his childhood in Leitrim, the Bohemian scene in Dublin in the 1950s, and the revolutionary social and economic changes that have occurred in Ireland in the last half-century.

In My Own Time Summary

In My Own Time: Inside Irish Politics and Society by James Downey

Woven into the story of his life and the national events of his times are the equally dramatic changes in which he participated during his twenty-seven years with the Irish Times.

His observations of the political, social and journalistic elements of Irish society are refreshingly independent, insightful and revelatory and his perspective is that of an engaged, quizzical and serious analyst of politics, society and mores.

James Downey has valuable first-hand knowledge of a number of key episodes in political history and in the history of the Irish media during the second half of the 20th century. Large parts of the book are, in this sense, witness statements: this is what it was like for one who was there.

About James Downey

James Downey's weekly political column in the Irish Independent is much admired for its style and wit. He was formerly foreign editor, London editor, political correspondent and deputy editor of the Irish Times. He has won several journalism awards including the Liam Hourican Award as Ireland's European Journalist of the Year in 1996.
