Changing Rural Life Summary

Changing Rural Life: A Christian Response to Life and Work in the Countryside by Jeremy Martineau

A prestigious and significant volume offering theological relection on a wide range of issues relating to the countryside, the rural economy and rural life. At a time when it has been officially recognised that British society is deeply uninformed about rural matters, this is a critical contribution from the Church to the wider debate taking place. Chapters focus on:Cultural Diversity, Agriculture, Globalisation and Local Economy, Food Production, Biodiversity, Isolated Communities, Spiritual Refreshment for an Urban Population and more. Rowan Williams distils this shared wisdom in a theological afterword. Contributors include Graham James-Norwich, John Saxbee-Lincoln, John Oliver-Hereford, John Davies-St Asaph, Richard Clarke- Meath & Kildare, Anthony Russell- Ely, Bruce Cameron- Aberdeen & Orkney.

Changing Rural Life Reviews

"Highly recommended as being a controversial and entertaining read, likely to be passed around from serious rural thinker to visionary farm business managers as 'food for thought when planning the future'." Independent Farm Business News "The book does reveal the ignorance and insensitivity of those whose decisions and policies affect our lives. (...) The qualitiy of the essays is high throughout, with a great deal of insightful comment on the realities of rural life, work and ministry.(...) this is an excellent introduction to the issues which face those of us who minister in the countryside, and I commend it." -- Alun Brookfield Ministry Today "...a fascinating, and varied, response to what is happening. (...)all the contributors give an remarkable scholarly-cum-visionary view of the old-new parish; and all incombents should read Changing Rural Life." -- Ronald Blythe Church Times "Written by Bishops with a knowledge of all parts of the United Kingdom, this book will help all involved or interested in rural life gain a deeper understanding of some of the Christian principles that have underpinned our national life for many centuries. (...) A good read for those in and out of church life with a passion for rural things." -- Jill Hopkinson Country Way "(...)this volume provides carefully researched information and theological reflection on issues that are facing rural communities today. (...)As an exercice for continuing professional development for bishops it has more than fulfilled its task. As an exercise in the development of the rural church and its essential role in rural communities and the contryside, it is only just beginning. This volume will help enormously those of us working to ensure that it succeeds." -- Jill Hopkinson Rural Theology
