Lambeth, Kennington and Clapham: Britain in Old Photographs by Jill Dudman
This book aims to give a visual impression of the northern and western parts of the borough of Lambeth as they appeared in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Starting from the riverside area at the northern end, historically known as Lambeth (as distinct from the much greater extent of the modern borough), the districts covered include also Vauxhall, South Lambeth, Kennington, Stockwell and Clapham. Strictly speaking, the last-mentioned of these is an odd one out, since only with the local government reorganisation of 1964 did Clapham become part of Lambeth, having always previously been in Wandsworth. The photographs range in date through several generations from the mid-1860s to the Second World War. This book is a must-have for any visitor or resident wanting to understand the origins of Lambeth.
