Inside Out and Outside In Summary

Inside Out and Outside In: Psychodynamic Clinical Theory and Psychopathology in Contemporary Multicultural Contexts by Joan Berzoff

The third edition of Inside Out and Outside In further explores the bio-psycho-social domains of clinical theory and practice in work with clients in multicultural settings. Key updates include two new chapters-one addressing relational and intersubjective theories, and another on cognitive behavioral theory and practice. The book maintains its respectful tone and empathetic voice while including new material on affective disorders; linking trauma theory with attachment; psychodyamic theory as it intersects with race and gender; and attending to client systems, including couples.

Inside Out and Outside In Reviews

Inside Out and Outside Inis a well-written and conceptually sound book that uses social work examples for treatment and pays close attention to diverse practice populations in a sensitive, culturally-competent manner. Students will find the book accessible and engaging. -- Susanne Bennett, Catholic University of America Inside Out and Outside In uses a biopsychosocial model representing a contemporary perspective that is inclusive of racial cultural and gender contextual theory. The integration of multicultural contexts within a dynamic framework supports a growing awareness of the limitations of using universal perspectives when working with 'difference.' Faculty and students wanting to understand modern psychodynamic theory and practice across various diagnostic domains and multicultural contexts will find this book a valuable resource for their professional development now and in the future. -- Leslie C. Jackson, Georgia State University Inside Out and Outside In, the most comprehensive, must-have textbook for all required Human Behavior and Practice courses is even better in its third edition. Kudos to Professors Berzoff, Flanagan, and Hertz for their expanded content and integration of state-of-the art psychodynamic content with rich, detailed case material and applied interventions, a wonderful contribution to the professional social work literature. -- Carole Tosone, New York University Silver School of Social Work; editor-in-chief of Clinical Social Work Journal Berzoff, Flanagan, and Hertz have triumphed once again. Their third edition of Inside Out and Outside In takes a comprehensive and thoughtful look at contemporary psychodynamic theories and their contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of traumatic and other common psychopathological conditions. The authors are to be congratulated for their cogent and practice-friendly writing that brings psychodynamic concepts to life and shows their relevance in work with a broad range of culturally diverse clients in today's world. This book promises to be an indispensable resource to students, trainees, beginning practitioners, and supervisors in social work and other mental health disciplines. -- Eda G. Goldstein, DSW, LCSW,Professor Emerita, Adjunct Professor, Director, Post Masters' Certificate Program in Advanced Clinical Practice, New York University
