Marginalization Summary

Marginalization by John Atherton

Can the urban church survive in Britain and Western Europe? The increasing irrelevance of churches and Christianity to people and public life drives this enquiry to look for answers by examining marginalization processes focused on divisions within and between nations, peoples and environment. John Atherton draws particularly on British, American and European political philosophy, economics, feminist ethics and theology to reconnect Christianity to people and public life. He also examines contemporary inter-faith issues and suggests a new Christian political economy engaging mainstream economics and interfaith economics.

Marginalization Reviews

Although Atherton's work is tightly argued and substantiated, this is an accessible work for parish ministers and interested lay people as well as serious scholars. The inclusion of an experiential, concrete case study of Manchester is especially helpful in illustrating the book's more abstract concepts. (...) the book is an important contribution to developing an ecclesiology for developed urban cultures in the twenty-first century and beyond. Wendy Dackson, East Aurora, New York, JOURNAL OF CHURCH AND STATE.
