William Shakespeare is the world's most famous and well-loved playwright whose works, including comedies, tragedies, histories and sonnets are known and taught across the globe. He began his career as an actor, dividing his time between Stratford and London. His early plays, such as Titus Andronicus brought him some success and renown, but when the theatres were closed by the plague in 1592, Shakespeare turned to poetry, before returning to drama, and his most famous plays, for the later, most prolific years of his life.
