An Open Book Summary

An Open Book by John Huston

This is the autobiography of one of the undisputed giants of cinema, whose colourful career as screenwriter, actor and director mirrored a personality larger than life. From a stunning directorial debut with The Maltese Falcon, he went on to dominate the film industry for more than half a century with his legendary narrative genuis. His successes in The African Queen, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Man Who Would be King, but his greatest glory came at the end of his life with the dual triumph of Prizz's Honor and The Dead, both starring his daughter Anjelica. This book tells the story of Huston's life, which was as varied and unpredictable as his work. Renowned as a hard drinker, gambler and hunter who made his home in America, Ireland and Mexico, he had numerous affairs and was married five times, to a schoolgirl; a gentlewoman; a motion-picture actress; a ballerina; and a crocodile: by the time of his death he was as familiar to the public as any one of his stars.
