JOHN I. GOODLAD is codirector of the Center for Educational Renewal at the University of Washington and president of the indepAndent Institute for Educational Inquiry in Seattle. MCMANNON is a researcher with the Institute for Educational Inquiry and teaches history at colleges and universities in Seattle.
