Philip Sutton Summary

Philip Sutton: Woodcuts 1962-1976 by John Russell Taylor

Philip Sutton is a popular and distinguished painter but his achievement as a printmaker is little known. This book brings together for the first time a treasure trove of vivid woodcuts - nudes, landscapes and portraits - which he produced during the 1960s and 1970s. These colourful and exciting images have remained in the artist's studio since they were created and have rarely been seen. The bold use of simplified areas of vibrant colour recalls Matisse's paper cut-outs but their sheer optimism and joy is all Sutton's own. John Russell Taylor's essay explores the artist's innovative technique, and the book is illustrated with over thirty of Sutton's remarkable works which in their subject matter and creamy pastel colouring have a very contemporary feel.
