Evita Summary

Evita: Intimate Portrait of Eva Peron by Juan Pablo Quieroz

By the time of her death in 1952 at the age of 33, the charismatic Argentine first lady Eva Peron had become the spiritual leader of a nation, a figure whose dramatic life inspired devotion, callous rumours, and fierce political debate. In spite of her position, Eva devoted her life to fighting for the rights of the descamisados, the poor and working class people of Argentina, with whom she felt deep empathy. This book seeks to chronicle the public and private life of Eva Peron, from her childhood in a poor provincial village to her early career as an actress in Buenos Aires, her marriage to future Argentine president Juan Peron, her critical role in politics, and her notorious funeral, when for days the crowds waited to view her body at the Ministry of Labour. Following a biographical introductory text, photographs are presented chronologically with substantial captions that include little-known anecdotes and excerpts from Evita's speeches. The photographs themselves were discovered in archives and private collections worldwide. Reproductions of magazine covers from the 1940s also appear, along with commemorative stamps, seals, mementos, sketches of Evita's designs for jewellery, and previously unseen family photographs.
