About Julia Darling

Julia Darling was a novelist, poet, playwright and founder member of The Poetry Virgins. She was born in Winchester, studied at Falmouth School of Art and in 1980 moved to the North East, where she lived for the rest of her life. She published two novels, a book of short stories, two collections of poetry and a book of plays. Julia founded Diamond Twig Press with Ellen Phethean and also co-edited The Poetry Cure, alongside Cynthia Fuller. Julia won several awards for her short fiction, including an Ian St James Award in 1996. Her stories appeared in anthologies and magazines and many were also broadcast on BBC Radio 4. Bloodlines, a collection of short stories, was published by Panurge in 1995. She always hoped that a second collection would follow. Julia was awarded the Northern Rock Foundation Writer's Award, run by New Writing North, in 2003. She was an Associate Royal Literary Fund Fellow of Literature and Health at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
