Impact Coaching Summary

Impact Coaching: Scaling Instructional Leadership by Julie Rae Smith

Too often, school improvement efforts don't gain full traction, Impact Coaching bucks the notion of leaving school leaders to learn the ropes on their own. Instead, the book engages in rich, rigorous, and reflective open-to-learning conversations with both coaches and colleagues to improve instructional leadership practices. It also uses Linking Walk templates to apply new ideas to real scenarios that improve lead learner practices.

Impact Coaching Reviews

The authors do a great job of sharing the benefits of coaching and elaborating on how the coaching partnership should and could look. The book is very relevant, clearly based on research, and has some great checklists to further clarify the recommended steps.

-- Kathy Rhodes, Principal

This book is full of valuable information that is presented in a clear and concise way. Due to its organization and conversational writing style, the book readily lends itself to a book study with collaborative teams.

-- Jessica McMillan, Instructional Coach

This book is well organized and cohesive. Examples and tables provide support throughout. Key takeaways at the end of each chapter help to reinforce the main points.

-- Angela M. Mosley, High School Principal

In Impact Coaching, Smith and Smith present a valuable resource for coaches, leaders, and aspiring coaches and leaders. Synthesizing relevant literature and their own work in K-12 settings, the authors lay out a comprehensive set of tools and strategies for improving practice through coaching. I used the text in my graduate course on instructional supervision, and my students raved about its relevance and utility for their professional goals.

-- Dr. Jerry Johnson, Professor
