Set in Liverpool during the 1930s, this is the story of Biddy O'Shaughnessy, left destitute when her widowed mother dies. At first she works as a live-in help for old Ma Kettle at the sweet-shop, but then runs away, living with an old schoolmate until she finds herself homeless once more.
