Inside Hazardous Technological Systems Summary

Inside Hazardous Technological Systems: Methodological foundations, challenges and future directions by Kenneth Pettersen Gould (University of Stavanger, Norway)

This book explores the challenges, opportunities, applications, and implications of applying qualitative research to critical questions of research and practice in the field of organizational risk and safety.

The book brings together a diverse perspective to explore the practice of conducting qualitative research as well as to debate the quality of research and knowledge, drawing on a range of different perspectives and traditions. It offers novel and innovative developments in data collection and data analysis methods and tools that can be applied to safety, risk, and accident analysis in complex systems. It also will present practical issues associated with data access and empirical research in challenging and high-stakes environments.

This book will provide academics, researchers, students, and professionals in the fields of safety, accident analysis, and risk with a broad-range and expert guide to the key issues and debates in the field, as well as a set of exemplary cases and reflective narratives from leading researchers in the field.

Inside Hazardous Technological Systems Reviews

"This collection is required reading for anyone seriously engaged in understanding large-scale organizations operating high-hazard technologies. It is an extraordinary reach across various analytical dialects seeking clarity and the possibilities of integration."

Todd R.LaPorte, Professor Emeritus and Professor of the Graduate School University of California, Berkeley

"The world of safety and technology are subject to rapid change. It is often hard for researchers and practitioners to keep up. Inside Hazardous Technological Systems does an excellent job of capturing the latest research in the world of safety. Moreover, a large part of the book is given over to a reappreciation of one of the pioneers of safety research, Professor Barry Turner. The book is a welcome revisiting of his work and contains contributions from the leading scholars in the fields of safety and risk. Id recommend it as essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary perspectives on safety, hazards, and technological systems."

Patrick Waterson, Reader in Human Factors and Complex Systems, Loughborough Design School, University of Loughborough
