This book introduces and reviews the essential principles of Veterinary Public Health, Zoonoses, One Health, principles and applications of epidemiology in studying infectious diseases including foodborne infections and intoxications.

The initial chapters discuss the concept and principal functions of Veterinary Public Health. The book further covers the impacts of Veterinary Public Health on human Health particularly in management of zoonoses.

The following section discusses theapplication of epidemiology in the study of outbreaks, epidemic, pandemics and their prevention and control strategies. It helps understanding the factors associated with disease causation transmission and spread and also investigate the emergence of antimicrobial resistance.

The chapter on foodborne illnesses illustrates how the knowledge of epidemiology is applied in the study of diseases in community, spread of causative agents from farm to fork. The definition, cause, symptoms, management, control and prevention of foodborne infection and intoxication are dealt with.

The last chapter introduces the concept, objectives, and definition of One Health and discusses the advancements made and challenges in One Health around endemic and emerging zoonotic diseases.

About Krishna Gopal Narayan

Dr Krishna Gopal Narayanremained engaged actively for 39 years in veterinary education and research in various capacities and is continuing his academic interest. He has been a rank officer beginning as House surgeon-cum-Demonstrator in Bihar Veterinary College, Patna in 1959, kept on changing positions through selection, as Assistant professor in Panjab Agricultural University and Associate Professor in Haryana Agricultural University. He moved on to Rajendra Agricultural University as Professor of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology and became Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry in Birsa Agricultural University. He retired in 1998.

He continues his interest in Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology right from the time earning his specialization degree (C. Sc., Budapest) in 1966 even after retirement. He is recipient of prestigious Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award for Outstanding Research in Tribal Farming Systems of ICAR (precisely for research on rabies). He was member of Veterinary Council of India. The Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists (IAVPHS) conferred him with Life Time Achievement Award for his outstanding contributions to the veterinary profession in general and Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology in particular.

He has more than 70 research publications in peer reviewed national and international journals besides many chapters in books. He has authored a book Epidemiology, diagnosis and management of zoonoses published by the ICAR. He has been a member of editorial committee of Indian Journal of Public Health, Haryana Veterinarian and Journal of Veterinary Public Health. He has chaired many scientific sessions in different conferences.

Dr Dharmendra Kumar Sinha, Principal Scientist is a senior faculty of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, India. His fields of research are monitoring and surveillance, seroepidemiology, investigation of animal disease outbreak, meta-analysis and economics losses due to animal diseases. He has handled several institutional projects as Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-PI of ICAR funded projects. Dr Sinha has served as referee for a number of journals which included Indian Journal of Comparative Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases; Journal of Applied Animal Research; Indian Journal of Animal Science; Journal of Veterinary Public Health. He has 25 years of Post-Graduate teaching experience of Epidemiology.

He has published more than 60 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journal. He has authored one book on epidemiology besides many chapters. He is a member of several scientific societies, including Indian Association of Veterinary Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases; Indian Association of Immunology and Immunopathology; and Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists.

Dr Dhirendra Kumar Singhis a Principal Scientist (Retd. April, 2022) in Division of Veterinary Public Health at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar, India. His research interest has been Foodborne Infections and Intoxications and Zoonoses particularly diagnosis and epidemiology. He has worked extensively in the field of brucellosis. Dr Singh has served as referee for numerous national and international journals which included Indian Journal of Comparative Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases; Journal of Applied Animal Research; Tropical Animal Health and production; Comparative Immunology, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. He was member of many expert committees in the ICAR and Department of Department of Animal Husbandry Dairying & Fisheries(DADF)under Government of India. He has varied teaching experience of more than 28 years and taught Veterinary Public Health; Zoonoses; Foodborne Infections & Intoxications; Fish Hygiene; Environmental Hygiene and Epidemiology to under graduate students and post graduate scholars as faculty at Division of Veterinary Public Health.

He has to his credit more than 50 research publications in peer reviewed national and international journals. He has also authored many chapters in book. He is a member of many scientific societies like Indian Association of Veterinary Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases; Indian Society of Veterinary Immunologists and Biotechnologists; Indian Association for Advancement of Veterinary Research; Indian Public Health Association.
