Lineup Summary

Lineup by Liad Shoham

From the author of Asylum City - now a 12-part TV series, starring Hani Furstenberg and Dvir Benedek.

After a brutal rape disturbs a quiet Tel Aviv neighbourhood, baffled detectives find no clues, no eyewitnesses, and no suspects. But the father of the shattered victim refuses to rest until justice is done, and begins his own investigation. Keeping watch over his daughter's apartment from the street, he notices Ziv Nevo lurking in the shadows, and hands him over to the police. All circumstances - and the victim - point to Nevo's guilt, and it appears the case is closed. Detective Eli Nachum is eager to wrap up this high-profile case, which has threatened to thwart his career.

But why does the suspect keep silent during the interrogation? What secret is he hiding? What unfolds is a brilliant, fast-paced story that will keep you guessing until the very last page. Lineup is a twisted tale of mistaken identity, organised crime, a disgraced detective looking for redemption, a tireless young reporter, and an innocent man with a not-so-innocent past. Which lines will they cross, and what will they be willing to risk, as their worlds begin to collapse? This seamless, gripping novel introduces a powerful new voice in crime fiction.

Lineup Reviews

'This is a terrific book - a marvel of tight plotting, spare prose, and relentless pacing. It's refreshingly cynical, deeply thrilling, and an exciting introduction to an author who's set to become an international superstar.'

-- Joseph Finder, New York Times bestselling author of Paranoia and Buried Secrets

'Liad Shoham has written a crime novel that is compelling on several different levels: as a mystery, as a tale of suspense, and as a work exploring the consequences of personal choices. Whether one calls it a mystery, suspense, thriller, or crime novel, one must call it a very, very good book.'

* New York Journal of Books *

'Lawyer/writer Shoham, dubbed the Israeli John Grisham, delivers a first-rate crime thriller in this first of his works to be translated to English.'

* New York Post *

'A brilliantly constructed crime thriller.' STARRED REVIEW

* Publishers Weekly *

'What begins as a crime thriller becomes the story of a detective's search for redemption ... Israeli author Shoham's gritty [novel] ... set in Tel Aviv ... marks [his] ... US debut. Let's hope he gives us many more stories like it.' STARRED REVIEW

* Kirkus Reviews *

'Lineup will grab you from the opening and take you on a seamless, unstoppable ride.'

* National Examiner *

'Michael Connelly fans will appreciate this American debut by a best-selling Israeli author.'

* Booklist *

'Shoham does a deft job keeping the story moving along the various threads of the initial crime and its consequences. The vagaries and details of big-city life are well drawn, and events and characters appear and vividly form as the story gains momentum ... bestselling Israeli author Shoham (the 'Israeli John Grisham') has written an enjoyable and compelling thriller that should appeal to fans of urban crime thrillers (such as those by Michael Connelly and Robert Crais).'

* Library Journal *

'Lineup is superbly plotted, the pace is pitch-perfect and the translation of the prose is magnificent.'

-- Rob Minshull * ABC's 'Weekend Bookworm' *

'There are deals made, budding romances, car bombs that don't detonate, a wannabe journalist-and a final, very satisfying resolution in which a telescope-bearing bubbe finally spills the beans.'

* Hadassah Magazine *

'An absorbing crime novel ... [that reveals] the everyday side to Israeli life.'

* Literary Review *

'A cleverly constructed and intricate crime novel.'

-- Jeff Popple * Canberra Times *

'Set in Tel Aviv, Lineup has a fast-moving narrative ... Shoham manages to write a dark story with a light touch. He doesn't shy away from the ugly aftereffects of violent crime, but he succeeds in delivering a page-turner with a subtle measure of gallows wit.'

* Ellery Queen Magazine *

'Line Up is a thrilling piece of crime writing.'

-- Jennifer Lyons * Launceston Examiner *

'This is a brilliant crime thriller ... top-class stuff, definitely recommended.'

-- Graeme Barrow * The Northern Advocate *

'Shoham creates a full-blooded thriller in Lineup, a novel with multiple shocks but blessedly free of cardboard characters. A smart and absorbing read, it offers readers who prefer thoughtful crime fiction a new voice and a riveting examination of justice systems.'
