Designers Linden and Beryl run a yarn shop together in Seattle, and their love for the different textures and colours of yarn shines through on every page of this vibrant book. It contains 16 funky designs, which include an ultra-stylish black fringed jcket, a classic green cardigan and a gorgeous variegated jumper. We love the colourful skirt knitted in the round - perfect for the weekend or trendy office wear. The spiral-bound format of the book and fold out pages allow you to read the pattern and see the beautifully shot full colour photographs at the same time. Great tips and finishing diagrams are included, along with detailed information on the yarns used.

If you are looking for a collection of sweaters that are both fashionable and fun to knit then this book of contemporary and stylish patterns is for you. It has been written by the owners of the renowned Tricoter knitting shop in Seattle which was opened in 1994 and continues to be eponymous with knitting style and innovation. Much of the input of this comes from the shop's enthusiastic and talented customers who have inspired Linda and Beryl in the pursuit of knitting perfection.

The book contains sixteen sweaters and cardigans that cover all fashion occasions from everyday wear to glamorous evening wear. The garments are all elegantly styled and many of the patterns are based on unusual or uncomplicated stitch patterns that are extremely effective yet surprisingly simple. The authors have taken the hard work out of creating a wearable and fashionable garment leaving us just the pure pleasure of the knitting and watching the fabric unfold. It is well worth buying the book for the Allegra jumper alone which features a great technique to produce a giant stitch. The pattern was devised at the shop after a customer sent in a shop-bought jumper for them to 'unravel' and this pattern is the result.

Each pattern in the book has an intriguing story as well as a mouthwatering pattern that will have you itching to knit. One of these is the cardigan on the cover which looks full of complex tweeding and stripes and turns out to be the 'wrong' side of Fair Isle knitting!

Although it is an American publication it uses yarns that we in the UK can actually get hold of such as Rowan but there is a helpful yarn substitution guide in the back for those that are a little more elusive. Another very interesting section is that on making up garments and as Tricoter offers this service to its customers, this really is valuable advice from the experts. The book is spiral-bound for easy reading but also has flip-out pages so you can see the photos and instructions at the same time.

No. 116, June 2007

A hard cover collection of knitting patterns displayed on tailor's dummies. This 96-page book has an internal spiral binding so it lies flat, and the pages fold out so the picture is opposite the whole pattern. Diagrams of the knitted shapes and dimensions are given and some of the sweaters have set-in sleeves although much of the body shaping is achieved by the garment's close fit. The designers' penchant for acid green shows up in 8 of the 16 projects (which include a skirt). The garments are designed for specific yarns but yardage and other details are given at the back of the book, so substitution is possible.
