The book contains nearly 100 recollections of Bartok, from his mother's memories of his childhood in provincial Hungary in the late 1880s, to reminiscences of his lingering illness and death in New York. Among those who remember Bartok are his two sons Bela and Peter, his first wife Marta Ziegler, fellow composers Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky, and pupils Antal Dorati and Georg Solti.
