In this text, Marie Borroff's translations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Pearl are collected together with a new verse translation of Patience, bringing together three of the four works by the anonymous Pearl-Poet. A retelling of the biblical story of Jonah and the whale, Patience turns the Book of Jonah into a human comedy, though the poem also includes a number of serious passages that enlarge its meaning and reinforce its moral message. In Patience, Jonah's sea journey, the storm that nearly wrecks his ship, his descent into the belly of the whale, his three days' sojourn there, and his adventures in and around Niniveh are all dramatized with brilliant realism.
