Does the Bible Really Say That? Summary

Does the Bible Really Say That?: Challenging our assumptions in the light of Scripture by Mark Woods

Does God have a specific plan for your life? Does God want to heal us all? This book started as one article, looking at whether God has a plan for our lives. But then the idea grew and the author wondered whether there were other things that deserve a hard look. 'What about forgiveness, evangelism, and spiritual growth? What about Genesis? Are we missing some of the richness and depth of our faith because we don't like to ask the questions we ought to ask? Are there different ways of thinking about old truths that might challenge and inspire us? Are there, even, old truths that turn out not to be true after all?' In this biblically faithful book, Mark Woods takes a forensic look at some favourite evangelical assumptions and asks whether they are built on strong Scriptural foundations. Is the truth deeper, more radical and more dangerous?

Does the Bible Really Say That? Reviews

Incisive, warm, articulate - this book is a breath of fresh air. Buy it, read it and ... breathe. -- Jeff Lucas * Broadcaster, speaker and author *
Those who know Mark's fine writing for the Christian Today website will come to this book expecting a quality read. I did. But I was still surprised by the breadth and scope of his probing and analysis. Mark sets out an honest, careful, and challenging reflection on what many Christians believe, exposing all too often a view of God which is often 'theologically flawed and psychologically cruel'. In each chapter, he looks painstakingly at the mismatch of the way we live with what we think the Bible teaches - not least in the areas of evangelism and forgiveness. His wide range of references - Damien Hirst, A.C. Grayling, Isaac Asimov, G K Chesterton, Freud, Marx, Darwin, Corrie Ten Boom. Haydn's Creation, Matthew Arnold, Byron - offer unexpected illustrations of his arguments, and draw us into fascinating dialogue with others. His touchstone throughout remains the need for a fully authentic Christianity lived publicly in our age. And its sensible and sensitive conclusions offer a more biblical way forward than we often embrace. -- Elaine Storkey * Speaker and author *
Mark is a friend of mine and just like this book conversation with him always causes me to stop, reflect and reconsider my assumptions and see things in a fresh light. This book will do the same for you. I can't promise you will agree with all of his conclusions but I can promise your thinking will be richer for reading it. -- Krish Kandiah * Author, speaker and Principal of LST *
