Sweet and Simple homemade is not just another bunch of whimsical patterns for girls who would wear fairy costumes 24/7 if their mothers weren't already dressing them as extras in A Series of Unfortunate Events. The garments featured in Melissa Wastney's lovely selection of projects to sew, stitch, knit and upcycyle for children, are both wearable and do-able - the book contains garment tissue paper patterns for infant to age 10 - but, very importantly, practical. The look is unfussy and natural, but brought up-to-date with zakka elements. In addition, unlike many pattern designers, Melissa Wastney doesn't neglect boys - there are plenty of clothes and items - including bags, stuffed toys and quilts - which can be made for both genders and adapted according to your child's favourite colours and textures, allowing them to express their own individuality in a sweet and simple way.

Sweet & Simple Handmade by Melissa Wastney is full of beautifully constructed clothing and toys for children from infants to teens. Each piece is lovingly designed with a child's needs in mind, from corduroy pants made to fit through a growth spurt to a warm winter coat that can be made with materials best suited for your child. Sweet & Simple Handmade includes pattern pieces and step-by-step instructions for each piece in the book. It includes knitwear as well as sewing and has patterns and clothing ideas for every season. The instructions are easy to follow, with clear sketches of each step along the way. There are even tips included for upcycling old pieces into new ones that children will love. It also includes tips on getting the little ones involved with the different projects throughout the book. Even if you're not ready to start crafting, the book itself is absolutely beautiful to just look at. The colors and patterns of the materials used are inspiring and the finished projects are so fun to look at. - See more at: http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2013/06/20/craft-book-review-sweet-simple-homemade/#sthash.kK5Ws8AX.dpuf
