Clwyd Railways in Old Photographs by Mike Hitches
The railway system in Clwyd covers the old counties of Flintshire in the east and Denbighshire in the west - both very different in character. The eastern part was very much the industrial centre of north Wales, while tourism was the basis of the economy in the west. Three major railway companies were responsible for operating trains here - the L&NWR, GWR and GCR, which became the LMS, GWR and LNER after Grouping in 1923. Three different companies gave a wide variety of locomotives, examples of which are pictured here, together with sample shed allocations lists, loco sheds, servicing facilities and stations.
