Summary
This collection of stories, by the Oscar-winning film-maker Neil Jordan, won a Somerset Maugham Award and the Guardian Fiction Prize in 1979. The Irish stories centre on what James Joyce called the soul's incurable loneliness, and the characters, like Joyce's, are vanquished in spirit.
