Happy Birthday Jamela Summary

Happy Birthday Jamela by Niki Daly

It's Jamela's birthday, and she and Mama are off to buy some new shoes. As soon as Jamela sees the Princess Shoes with their sparkly buckles and little satin bows, she falls in love with them, but Mama points out that she'll have to wear the shoes for school too, so a sad Jamela ends up with sensible black shoes. Alone in her room, Jamela tries her best to make the shoes look princessy with beads, glitter and glue. She only succeeds in making Mama very angry, but a lady called Lilly thinks Jamela's decorated shoes are fabulous.

Happy Birthday Jamela Reviews

Fans for the very popular Jamela series will enjoy this book. The story will strike a familiar note with all little girls who have ben taken out to buy new shoes and denied those they really wanted for a pair of 'sensible' school shoes. Even now I can remember being in a similar situation myself. Jamela's solution to transform her strong black school shoes into birthday girl shoes is very inventive and believable, although of course it does get her into trouble! The story deals sensitively with conflicts of this sort that can occur in any family and there is a happy development which brings about a resolution for all concerned. The illustrations are extremely expressive and add another strong layer of meaning to the story. www.writeaway.org.uk Niki Daly's fourth Jamela book, with its African township setting and vibrant illustrations, will strike a universal chord in every little girl who has ever dreamt of being a princess. www.bettybookmark.co.uk The Jamela stories of everyday life depict experiences that will resonate with young children, irrespective of cultural background.
