A Vicarage Family Summary

A Vicarage Family by Noel Streatfeild

Once upon a time there were three little girls: Isobel, the eldest, was pretty, gentle and artistic; Louise the youngest, was sweet and talented -- and then there was Vicky, the odd one out, the plain one. Everyone pities the poor vicar, who's got such a difficult daughter. Vicky doesn't work at school, she's awkward at home, and she's not pretty or talented like her sisters. But all is not as it seems. When Vicky grows up and her first children's book is published to great acclaim, it is her family who are the least surprised. For the Vicky of this story if the much-loved Noel Streatfeild, and her first book was the famous Ballet Shoes. This is the story of her childhood, told in her own words. An autobiographical novel written by one of the twentieth century's best-loved children's authors.

A Vicarage Family Reviews

"Noel Streatfeild's position in the children's book world is unique. She is endlessly inventive, full of verve and real understanding of the surfaces of childhood. Her stories are rich in documentary interest and entertainment, escapism of a most satisfying sort." TLS "Noel Streatfeild is an author who is a true master of her craft." Illustrated London News "Noel Streatfeild has that happy, skilful knack of turning her characters into real people -- something which only really good novelists can do." BBC Children's Hour
