Inverse Problems and Optimal Design in Electricity and Magnetism P. Neittaanmaki (Professor, Department of Mathematics, Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Jyvaskyla)

Inverse Problems and Optimal Design in Electricity and Magnetism By P. Neittaanmaki (Professor, Department of Mathematics, Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Jyvaskyla)

Summary

The impact of optimization methods in electromagnetism has been much less than in mechanical engineering and particularly the solution of inverse problems in structural mechanics. This book addresses this omission: it will serve as a guide to the theory as well as the computer implementation of solutions. It is self-contained covering all the mathematical theory necessary.

Inverse Problems and Optimal Design in Electricity and Magnetism Summary

Inverse Problems and Optimal Design in Electricity and Magnetism by P. Neittaanmaki (Professor, Department of Mathematics, Professor, Department of Mathematics, University of Jyvaskyla)

In the last thirty years optimization theory has been extensively applied to the optimal design of mechanical structures and, in general, to the solution of inverse problems in structural mechanics. In electromagnetism, however, the impact of optimization methods is much more recent. The present book is the first one on the subject of inverse problems and optimal design in electricity and magnetism. Filling this gap in the literature was the primary goal of the authors. The secondary one was to provide a comprehensive reference book offering a broad view of the subject ranging from theory to computer implementations. Having this in mind, the authors tried to write a book which might serve as a textbook for graduate students in electrical engineering as well as a reference for applied mathematicians and researchers. Possible applications pertain to a great many different areas: electrical machines, high voltage engineering, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrography, electron optics, plasma techniques, etc.

The authors have written a book which will serve as a textbook for graduate students in electrical engineering as well as a reference for applied mathematicians and researchers. * ISIS'97 *
This volume succeeds in its aim of being a comprehensive introduction to optimisation methods used in the synthesis of electric and magnetic fields and devices. ... Both graduate students and researchers will find the book useful. * Aslib Book Guide, vol.61, no.5, May 1996. *
There is much of interest in this book which in a sense bridges the gap between electromagnetic theory and numerical analysis. ...The book is interesting, well written and fulfils its purpose and can be recommended... * G.
