The Paris Enigma Summary

The Paris Enigma by Pablo de Santis

An elegant and atmospheric literary thriller that will delight fans of The Interpretation of Murder and The Shadow of the Wind

In late nineteenth century Europe, Jack the Ripper stalks the streets of London and the city of Paris marvels at a new spectacle: the Eiffel Tower. As visitors are drawn to glimpse the centrepiece in an exhibition of wonderful scientific creation, another momentous gathering is taking place in the city.

Twelve of the world's greatest sleuths have gathered to dicuss their most famous cases and debate the nature of mystery. When one of them is found viciously murdered, however, the symposium becomes an elite task force dedicated to solving the outrage.

For a young apprentice detective, Sigmund Salvatorio, this is the chance to realize a dream of working with some of the finest criminologists to ever practice. But as, one by one, members of the committee fall prey to the mysterious killer, the dream becomes a shocking nightmare...

'... luminous ... Winner of the first Premio Planeta-Casa de America de Narrativa prize, The Paris Enigma is a tightly spun thriller and a quick read, thanks to the able translation by Mara Lethem. Mr. De Santis effortlessly incorporates important historical events (the building of the tower and the World's Fair) into his narrative, as well as capturing the turn-of-the-century uneasiness over the emergence of the machine age. And while the reader may have an idea of the suspect's identity well before the mystery is solved, it's the motive that will keep the guessing lively until the end' Wall Street Journal

'. . . a complex whodunit that provokes thought as well as entertainment, on subjects from waterproof shoeshine cream to ancient Greek physics. It fires multiple, intense bursts of crime stories at the reader, some only a page or so long. And it climaxes with serial murders that tie into the building of the Eiffel Tower and the Paris World's Fair of 1889' Associated Press
