Teaching Music in Primary Schools Summary

Teaching Music in Primary Schools by Patrick Jones

Written for primary teacher trainees (both undergraduate and postgraduate), this book covers the range of music education from Foundation Stage to the end of KS2. It equips trainees to teach music confidently, whatever their level of musical experience or formal skills. All of the recommended practical and reflective tasks may be undertaken by both generalists and specialists. The book recognises the role of music in a creative and enjoyable classroom environment, as envisaged in Excellence and Enjoyment. As such, it encourages the use of music both for its own sake, and as a stimulus and support across the curriculum.

About Patrick Jones

Patrick Jones has experience of teaching in both primary and secondary schools, and subsequently became a head teacher of a primary school. He has undertaken advisory work and run local authority courses on music education. Most recently he has joined the Institute of Education at Manchester Metropolitan University as a senior lecturer teaching music education for generalists and specialist music courses, as well as art education and professional studies. He is leader for the PGCE Primary Programme at the MMU Didsbury site. Chris Robson is Senior Lecturer in music at the Institute of Education at MMU, and Year Leader for final year undergraduates on the BA (Hons) Primary Education. She was previously a primary teacher in Liverpool and quickly took on the role of coordinator for expressive arts, involving children in choirs, festivals and concerts. The desire to encourage trainee teachers to get over the music 'fear factor' took her into Initial Teacher Education and her current roles. She has contributed to a number of Music Education Conferences and has acted as an educational consultant for the BBC for their Primary Schools Music Radio Broadcasts. A study of a project examining the role of HE in the Arts will form the culmination of her MA in Education.
