Treehouses Summary

Treehouses by Paula Henderson

As children's hideaways, ornamental garden features, spiritual retreats and even as offices, studios and full-time homes, treehouses provide places of isolation, independence and imagination, where one can literally rise above the demands of daily life. This book explores these ever-popular structures around the world: from the treehouse-dwelling tradition of South Sea hunter-gatherers to the Green Magic eco-treehouse resort in Kerala, India; from the 400-year-old chapel-in-an-oak in Normandy to the 'tree nest' and 'tree tunnel', linked by a hanging bridge that movie star John Malkovich created for his children. The authors describe ornamental treehouses in gardens of the past, people who have taken to the trees as a way of life and the ecologically sustainable structures using modern technology that will be the treehouses of tomorrow's world. The book includes advice on the practicalities of construction from expert treehouses builders. Authoritative and well-researched, with fabulous photographs and illustrations, it is destined to become the classic work on this magical subject.

Daily Express This unusual and wonderful book will certainly appeal to people of all ages Garden The perfect gift for a dreamer. Sunday Business Post 5 Stars - If you think the kids' tree house you built at the end of the garden is the bee's knees, then don't let the children see this gem - a compendium of arboreal domiciles that contain everything you need to know about wooden shacks balancing precariously high above the ground. In chapters, 'Private Treehouses' and 'Treehouses of the Future', you'll find the folks who really are out of their trees. This is where fantasy takes over in the land ruled by fairies. Amateur Photographer Pick of the Picture Books: A lifeline to those who consigned treehouses to the same Elysian fields as sandpits and paddling pools, 'Treehouses' provides a fascinating account of the earliest form of natural architecture. Meticulous photography is complemented by detailed research of the arboreal abodes. Independent Having read this book and flicked through its images a few hundred times, I feel it is irresistible as a coffee table, waiting room or bedside locker book for both dreamers and the more practical reader alike with an array of guidelines, instructions and a list of specialist companies who will actually build a treehouse for you.
