About Peter Daempfle

Dr. Peter Daempfle has taught in the sciences for over 20 years and has experience authoring other titles within the sciences. His research and publications range from allied health work in medical microbiology and materials science to science education. His most recent work focuses on the transition of students from high school to college science, their development of scientific reasoning, and retention in STEM majors. Science & Society: Scientific Thought and Education for the 21st Century represents a part of that effort. As a science advisor in the standards-based reform effort, Dr. Daempfle has striven to improve national science literacy and advance the importance of scientific thinking. He was the first science education researcher to use qualitative approaches to study the academic transition between secondary and post-secondary biology programs. His journal articles are cited extensively and used in contemporary studies throughout the science education literature. A scholar in his field, Dr. Daempfle has also authored several refereed journal articles, various science reviews, a laboratory manual, and lectures to scientific and general audiences.
