King of Sports Summary

King of Sports: Cycle Road Racing by Peter Ward

'There is no other book in the English language entirely devoted to describing this complex sport. I thought it was high time we had one.' In 1967 Peter Ward crashed in a training ride. While recovering, he wrote the iconic King of Sports: Cycling Road Racing, which hasn't been republished since - until now. Sixty years ago, King of Sports provided up-and-comers, trainers and veterans with a tried and tested methodology towards not just training and racing, but the lifestyle to go with it. Ward was ahead of his time - he preached the benefits of clean living, while breaking down exactly what that means; he urged his readers to seek out yoga, for 'you will discover much that will benefit you as a cyclist, and it will lead you to a fuller life.' Ward's detailed graphs, diagrams and meticulous listings of equipment and nutrition offer today's tech-fiend cyclist a snapshot into the work ethic of a 1960s amateur cyclist. It demonstrates how far the sport has come, yet how much it has remained unchanged. This new edition, reimagined for a twenty-first century audience, features a Foreword by former UCI and British Cycling president Brian Cookson, an extended biography of the author, and restored original hand-drawn artwork and photography.

About Peter Ward

Peter Ward JP MBE (1934 - 2017) was a dynamic character who believed nothing was impossible. A former international cyclist, he began cycling at the age of 16, often borrowing a bike to go out on club runs in Lancashire. Over his illustrious career Ward won over 30 first class races and organised many top-class racing events including the International Grand Prix of Leyland, an 80-mile gruelling road race attracting some of the top UK and European road cyclists. Beyond competition, he became an advocate for the physical and mental health benefits of cycling in the area, establishing the Guild Wheel in Preston, a 21-mile green cycleway that is used by over 100,000 locals each year. Peter served as an elected Labour City Councillor for over 30 years, including Chair of Housing, tackling deprivation, health issues, poverty and other inequalities. He also became a Trade Union representative at British Aerospace, and served as a Justice of the Peace at Preston Magistrates Court for over 40 years. In 2012 Peter was awarded an MBE for his services to cycling.
