Summary

Two countries whose histories were and are deeply influenced by relationships with a neighbouring metropolitan power are compared along their economic, social and cultural dimensions (why did Presbyterians have higher rates of illegitimacy than Catholics?) and matters of land (why did Scottish tenants leave quietly while the Irish did not?)

Ireland and Scotland Summary

Ireland and Scotland: Order and Disorder, 1600-2000 by R. J. Morris

Some of the most innovative chapters involve the relationship of historical understanding on the present, as exemplified in the minds of Unionist politicians searching for a new identity or in the minds of the creators of the wall murals in nationalist and unionist areas of Belfast. These themes are brought together in an introduction which looks at the strands of commonality and difference in the histories of Ireland and Scotland.
