Following the success of its sister volume, which covered the 1970s, this book features anothr classic era as Forumla 1 - attracting growing interest via TV - became a mainstream sport. The 1980s saw the emergence of McLaren and Williams as the dominant teams. Normally aspirated engines gave way to more powerful turbocharged units, before the regulations changed in 1989 to favour non-turbo motors again. The defining drivers were Gilles Villeneuve, Alan Jones, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The 1980s saw the demise of the privateer entrants as technology and costs escalated.

Frankfurt based Rainer Schlegelmilch is an acclaimed motor racing reporter who began covering F1 in 1962 and still attends every race. Quentin Spurring, who lives in Surrey, was editor of Autosport, the world-leading weekly motor racing magazine, through most of the 1980s.

1980 - a war between FOCA and FISA that almost destroyed the sport. 1981 - McLaren introduced the all-carbonfibre monocoque. 1982 - Villeneuve's death overshadowed the season. 1983 - Cosworth's normally aspirated engine recorded its last three victories. 1984 - Lauda won his third world title, Senna joined Toleman. 1985 - Prost was World Champion, Senna moved to Lotus. 1986 - Frank Williams was paralysed in a road accident. 1987 - Mansell just lost the title for the second year running. 1988 - McLaren dominated, with Prost and Senna winning all but one race. 1989 - Berger survived a fiery accident at Imola.
