This is an intense and exciting story about rural life in Britain just before the First World War. Arthur is the school dunce and is always being picked on by his teacher but away from the classroom his knowledge of nature and the country is remarkable. When Dad dies and Arthur has to support the family he uses his skills to keep the family alive but poaching is illegal and Arthur worries about how long he will manage to evade capture and stay out of prison.
