Mimoun Summary

Mimoun by Rafael Chirbes

A teacher with literary aspirations, bored with his native Spain, travels to Morocco. He arrives in the ancient city of Fez, where he learns to appreciate the depth and richness of the local Arab culture. Still yearning to be away from the noise and bustle of city life, however, he moves to a house on the lower slopes of the Atlas mountains, where he hopes to find the space and tranquility that have so long eluded him.

Mimoun Reviews

His writing brings to us the bitter aroma of good literature. It is impossible to forget the moon and jacarandas of Mimoun * La Vanguardia *
'In Mimoun, Rafael Chirbes gives an account of Moroccan life in which he successfully avoids the colonialist or paternalist approach...Mimoun offers an excellent introduction to a world that is geographically and historically close to Spain but which, precisely because of this closeness, is rarely portrayed accurately'TLS (of the Spanish Edition) ?Mimoun is utterly convincing in its psychological details, but it is also memorable for the beauty of its writing and rhythms?
