Key Buildings of the 20th Century Summary

Key Buildings of the 20th Century: Plans, Sections and Elevations by Richard Weston

Featuring more than one hundred of the most significant and influential buildings of the twentieth century, this second edition has been expanded and updated to include new buildings from the early part of the twenty-first century and work by architects who have risen to increasing international prominence. Richly illustrated with hundreds of architectural drawings and photographs, this book includes classic works by such seminal architects as Le Corbusier, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, and Alvar Aalto, as well as masterpieces by more recent masters such as Norman Foster and Frank Gehry.

For each building there are numerous, accurate scale plans showing typical floors, together with elevations, sections, and site plans where appropriate. All of these have been specially commissioned for the book and are based on the most reliable information and sources. A concise text supplemented by full-color images explains the significant architectural features of each building and the influences it shows or had generated. Cross-references to other buildings in the book highlight the various connections between these key structures. As an added bonus for readers, a free CD-ROM containing digital files of all the drawings is included inside the book.

Key Buildings of the 20th Century Reviews

[W]ell-done installment from the 'Key Building' series....this information-packed book avoids the generalities of the historical survey genre, particularly for architects who want to get into the buildings and understand the ordering of their spaces. The CD with Autocad plans is a unique feature... -- Daniel Heuberger, AIA, LEED AP - Oculus
A broad and balanced range of building types are shown, and the drawings are particularly important for students and practitioners....Recommended. -- CHOICE
[I]t is nice to see a book like this. A book that gives us beautiful buildings, something to inspire people and to show what architecture can do. These are buildings that stand the test of time and will continue to inspire new generations who will push what is possible even further.... for students to become inspired to reach for the stars. -- San Francisco Book Review
Richard Weston updates his 2004 masterpiece with new buildings, reflecting the architecture of the early 21st century, and with new architects, who have gained prominence in recent years. -- Lillian Civantos - Contract Magazine's Talk Contract blog
