Pilgrimage as Rite of Passage: Guidebook for Youth Ministry by Robert Brancatelli
The author has created a program to help youth make the often difficult transition to adulthood by using a pilgrimage as a rite of passage. Spanning several weeks and involving outdoor activity, the process begins with catechetical sessions based on scripture and prayer. It then moves on to ritual interaction between males and females, journaling, fasting under supervision, a medicine walk, and a circle dance. An overnight stay at a remote place is the physical pilgrimage, followed by a period of reflection in which participants commit themselves to the community.
