Europe Today Summary

Europe Today: A Twenty-First Century Introduction by Ronald Tiersky

This clearly written and comprehensive book, a true twenty-first-century enterprise, is the only work that offers a sustained and unified set of both country case studies and analysis of the European Union. The contributors, an authoritative group of Americans and Europeans, explore the new Europe---West and East--using intertwining themes of domestic politics, European integration, and European security. Each chapter provides a foundation of basic political information and explanation, enhanced by distinctive and informed perspectives on current issues. Now in its third edition, Europe Today presents the most up-to-date and thoughtful treatment available on the war in Iraq, debates over NATO's evolving role, U.S.-European relations, enlargement issues, and the challenges of terrorism in a European context. All chapters have been thoroughly revised, and completely new chapters have been added on France, Great Britain, Russia, Central and Eastern Europe, EU law, and terrorism. With its strong international emphasis and focus on Europe before and after Iraq, this book will lead readers toward a coherent view of intra-European conflicts, Europe and the United States, and Europe's international responsibilities. A new website devoted exclusively to the book, with regularly updated statistics, analysis, and links for each chapter, provides a rich resource for those seeking additional information. http://www.jhubc.it/europe-today/

Europe Today Reviews

I was very impressed with Europe Today. It seems almost tailor-made for the way I've been teaching the course and the material I always want to cover. -- Jeff Persels A superb overview of Europe's political, economic, and strategic landscape, offering a comprehensive and penetrating analysis of the European Union and its individual member states. -- Charles A. Kupchan This title continues the tradition of past editions by examining contemporary European politics and economics. As in earlier editions, the book includes a time line, an introduction, country studies, and chapters that focus on significant trends. Comparing the countries included in the "Country Studies" section of this newest edition reveals some differences. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, and the Scandinavian region are featured in all previous editions, whereas Russia and Poland, included in this fourth edition, did not always appear in older editions. The country studies provide an excellent historical overview, along with coverage of the current political climate, for each featured country. The chapter on postwar Italy's complicated political history is particularly interesting. The editors continue to address significant European issues. Contributors represent scholars from a variety of disciplines and institutions. Some names are new to this edition, while others have contributed to earlier versions. Chapters include box inserts of news articles, statistics, maps (where relevant), and a bibliography for further reading. The "Thematic Chapters" section supports the tone set in the introduction, which states that "Europe faces an existential crisis," by focusing on the struggles for European integration, governance, and dealing with NATO.
