Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale--IV (BAARS-IV), (Wire-Bound Paperback) Summary

Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale--IV (BAARS-IV), (Wire-Bound Paperback) by Russell A. Barkley

The Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale-IV (BAARS-IV) offers an essential tool for assessing current ADHD symptoms and domains of impairment as well as recollections of childhood symptoms. Directly linked to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria, the scale includes both self-report and other-report forms (for example, spouse, parent, or sibling). Not only is the BAARS-IV empirically based, reliable, and valid, but it is also exceptionally convenient to use. The long version takes the average adult 5-7 minutes to complete, and the Quick Screen takes only 3-5 minutes. Special features include a section of items assessing the newly identified symptoms of sluggish cognitive tempo, also known as the inattentive-only subtype of ADHD. Complete instructions for scoring and interpreting the scale are provided.

Barkley Adult ADHD Rating Scale--IV (BAARS-IV), (Wire-Bound Paperback) Reviews

Barkley is one of the leading scientists in ADHD. With this rating scale, he continues to advance our scientific understanding of the assessment of this disorder.--Lenard Adler, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Director, Adult ADHD Program, New York University School of Medicine

The BAARS-IV is a valuable addition to the assessment process for ADHD in adults. Barkley has created a valid and reliable tool that will greatly aid in the diagnostic and differential diagnostic process for ADHD. I will definitely include this current, comprehensive scale in my adult assessments, and I encourage other clinicians to do the same.--Sam Goldstein, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Utah School of Medicine; Clinical Director, Neurology, Learning, and Behavior Center, Salt Lake City

Based on DSM-IV criteria, and normed on a large, representative sample of the adult population, the BAARS-IV will increase the reliability and validity of diagnoses of ADHD in adults. In addition to the self-reports of current and childhood symptoms, the BAARS-IV includes other-report forms and a quick screening tool. The development and validation of this scale and its presentation in the manual reflect Barkley's usual impeccable work and his extensive clinical and research experience with ADHD.--Mary V. Solanto, PhD, Department of Pediatrics, Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell

- Reliable, empirically based, and convenient to use for clinicians. Allow[s] a doctor to quantify behaviors that can't be readily observed in the clinic. --ADDitude Magazine, 02/03/2011
