The transformation and industrialization of rural China is the underlying theme of this book. Using case studies of selected regions in south China where rural changes have been particularly dramatic, the book discusses and analyses (1) how, in the process of rural transformation, capital and labour are mobilized and reallocated, (2) some of the problems and consequences of rapid rural industrialization, (3) efforts of local governments to stabilize agriculture during the transition, and (4) the loss of farm land from urbanization and rural industrial growth.

About S. Ho

Y. Y. KUEH is Chair Professor of Economics and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Lingnan College, Hong Kong. He is the author and co-author of several books, including Industrial Reform and Macroeconomic Instability in China, The Chinese Economy under Deng Xiaoping, Agricultural Instability in China, 1931-1991 and Economic Trends in Chinese Agriculture. His most recent books include The Political Economy of Sino-American Relations: A Greater China Perspective and China and the Asia Pacific Economy.

SAMUEL P. S. HO is Professor in the Department of Economics and Director of the Centre for Chinese Research at the University of British Columbia. He is the author of Economic Development of Taiwan, 1860-1970 and Rural China in Transition: Non-agricultural Development in Rural Jiangsu, 1978-1990, as well as other books and articles on economic development and the economies of east Asia.
