Rembrandt Drawings Summary

Rembrandt Drawings by Seymour Slive

This title presents an authoritative and highly illustrated survey of nearly 150 drawings from one of the world's greatest-ever draftsmen. Rembrandt is one of the world's most famous and most studied artists, yet there has been no up-to-date survey of his extraordinary achievements as a draftsman - until now. In this superbly illustrated volume, acclaimed Rembrandt scholar Seymour Slive provides an in-depth study of nearly 150 of the artist's drawings - accompanied by etchings and paintings - arranged thematically, focusing on everything from self-portraits and portraits of family and friends to religious and historical subjects. Rembrandt Drawings also includes a discussion of some of the more doubtful attributions to Rembrandt's body of work, which accounts for the considerable reduction in the number of drawings ascribed to the master from his early life.

About Seymour Slive

Rembrandt scholar Seymour Slive (b. 1920) was appointed Professor of Fine Arts at Harvard in 1961. Slive, Jakob Rosenberg and E. H. ter Kuile were commissioned by Nikolaus Pevsner to write the Pelican History of Art volume for Dutch art and architecture, published 1966. It was later reissued under his sole authorship. He was Slade Professor at Oxford, 1972-73 and in 1975 was appointed Director of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.
