Ride On, Sister Vincent by Sheldon Dyan
Dark, grey dilapidated buildings, leaking rain - Sister Vincent's first impression of St Agnes in the Pasture convent is hardly inspirational. But then to straight-laced Mother Margaret Aloysius, her nuns and three teenage girl pupils, the new arrival is something of a sight herself in silver wellies and pink glasses, a box of tools under her arm. The Lord, it seems, works in a mysterious way indeed - sending a dynamic, globe-trotting teacher of motor mechanics to a school that barely has electric lighting, never mind a car. The discovery of an ancient bike in the barn, however, gives Sister Vincent and the run-down school a surprising and exhilarating kick-start! And for the three pupils its a real education. Sheldon has written "Tall, Thin and Blonde" and "My Brother's an Alien from Another Planet". She is also the author of three stories about an extraterrestrial cat - "Harry and Chicken", "Harry the Explorer" and "Harry's Holiday". She is the author of "Skywatching" and "A Night to Remember" as well as "The Whales' Song" which was the winner of the 1991 Kate Greenaway Medal.
