A Spooky Tale Summary

A Spooky Tale: A walk with our Teacher by Sue Wickstead

When the children went on a walk to look around the district it led to the class writing a shared story. This is a story full of imagination. Where did the class go and what did they see? What could possibly happen? Many years later, and with a few changes, their story was re-written.

A Spooky Tale Reviews

Reviewed by Vernita Naylor for Readers' Favorite A Spooky Tale: A Walk With Our Teacher by Sue Wickstead is a great book to help pique your child's imagination. Children of all ages will enjoy reading through the pages of this picture book. What originally started out as a project over 10 years ago, with a teacher and her students on their walk around the neighborhood, turns into a world of adventure. The beautiful illustrations and the insights of the children help to display a child's imagination. Walk through the neighborhood where you will see and experience so many things. On the journey you will walk past many things; from a school, a park, the church, and the nursery school to a bridge where you will encounter a wide array of animals and creatures from a bear and a dragon to a dinosaur. What great fun your child will have walking through the neighborhood with the students and their teacher. This book was cute and fun to read. I'm sure that it was just as fun to create for the teacher and the students. It is always great to discover new, engaging and exciting books. Children will enjoy reading this book just like I did. As an educational book, young readers will learn how to read maps and learn about trails. This book stimulates the mind and cognitive abilities to help children to dream and visualize the world around them. If you're looking for a book that your child would want to read over and over again, and maybe share with their friends, this is it. Goodreads I read this with my 2 youngest children who are 6 and 2, they both equally enjoyed it. They wanted to turn the page to see what was next and which creature it was going to be. My daughter read it on her own, she is 8 in a few days. Her feedback was that she especially loved the maps and she thought it was 'impressive' in her own words. I absolutely loved the colour throughout the book and not just on the cover. The illustrations were what I would expect to see in a published book, professionally drawn. The story was fantastic because straight away all children can relate to the book in terms of having s teacher. The repeated calls helps children to understand what is happening throughout the book and from a reading aspect the repetitiveness can help familiarise those words for the children. These factors are why it has to have '5 stars. Amazon Really well-designed. Nice layout, good font choice and nice text treatment. I LOVE the personalities displayed on this cover. Each face has so much expression. The spooky shadows on the wall are also fantastic, and they frame the title very nicely. Illustrations I love just about any book that starts with a map. I've always been keen on minute details in children's books, so I love poring over a well-drawn map. Carrying on, the artwork throughout this book is fantastic. I love the style, and I'm so impressed with the way the artist captured the author's vision. Each monster is adorable (if that's the right word) and hilarious, and every page is just packed with fun. The art really tells the story all on its own - which is quite impressive.

About Sue Wickstead

As a teacher, for many years, I have shared and told stories. In addition I also worked with a Children's Charity. The charity was a Playbus, which was a mobile project taking play to the children wherever they might be. The Playbus was much loved and many children, now grown up have very fond memories. My involvement led me to write a photographic history book about it. In the many school I visited, as a cover teacher, I have been able to talk about and share the bus experience. The children asked many questions and it led to story telling, which led to the story writing. My children enjoyed their Playbus experiences too and have fond memories. The original bus was a project funded by the Queen's Silver Jubilee Community Awards and it was a pioneering project. Many other bus projects were seen in action across the country. I have always written stories or told stories to the classes I have taught, I decided to write down a few adventures. After sharing the first story with many children the tale was ready to publish. Bewbush Playbus is the real life bus while 'Jay-Jay the Supersonic Bus' is the fictional tale. From Fact to fiction the bus journey continues with more stories written and on their way.
