Verbal Protocols in Literacy Research Summary

Verbal Protocols in Literacy Research: Nature of Global Reading Development by Susan E. Israel (University of Dayton, Ohio, USA)

This volume offers an updated analysis of the methodology of reading and reading research since 1995, when the landmark book Verbal Protocols of Reading: The Nature of Constructively Responsive Reading by Michael Pressley and Peter Afflerbach was published. It offers a thorough cross-analysis of the conscious processes experienced during reading, the structure of reading comprehension, and its application to more current initiatives such as Common Core State Standards and Response to Intervention. It also provides a detailed analysis of Constructively Responsive Reading through relevant online self-report studies in reading and reading comprehension behavior. It is a fresh and comprehensive volume that speaks not only to reading researchers, but to literacy teachers at all levels.

Verbal Protocols in Literacy Research Reviews

"This update of verbal protocol research in the rst two decades of the 21st century will be of signicant interest to reading teachers and researchers globally. As a Canadian literacy researcher who was already familiar with Pressley and Aferbachs seminal (1995) publication, I highly appreciate Israels decision to include and even highlight global verbal protocol studies and reading comprehension development at the international level. In addition, Israels updates are especially valuable given the major shifts in thinking in this century regarding the nature of literacy."- Terry A. Campbell, Schulich School of Education, Nipissing University, North Bay, ON, Canada, UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning
