Newtown, Reading Summary

Newtown, Reading: A Photographic Journey in 1974 by Terry Allsop

Evocative black and white images of the streets, the houses, the canal and the people reveal glimpses of a vibrant society on the brink of change, in which children play on the streets and intricate brickwork details contradict the fragility and decay already apparent in the buildings. This beautiful book will fascinate anyone either personally or professionally interested in the social history of Reading. The author re-discovered the negatives for this collection of photographs on his retirement and staged two exhibitions of the photographs in conjunction with Reading Library in 2009 and 2011.

About Terry Allsop

Terry Allsop was born in London in 1940 but moved to Grimsby in 1944 because of bomb damage to the family home. Moving back to the Thames Valley in the 1960s, Terry worked for several architectural practices and it was whilst he was employed at the Reading office of Broadway & Malyan that he was charged with the brief of recording each building in every street in the 16 acre site about to be demolished and redeveloped.
