The Rugged Road Summary

The Rugged Road by Theresa Wallach

The remarkable story of two women, the first in the world to drive the length of Africa, and the first to cross the Sahara on a motorcycle. London to Cape Town overland by motorcycle and sidecar, pulling a trailer. No roads, no back up - just straight across the Sahara through equatorial Africa, and South to the Cape - in 1934/35, without even a compass! Undeterred by nomads, sand drifts, heat, rain, rivers, breakdowns and politics, Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron completed a journey that might well defeat a modern motorcycle, and Florence even rode back as far as the Sahara! From oasis to oasis arguing with the French Foreign Legion for permission to continue, and winning; fashioning a tow hitch for the trailer when it broke in the desert; rebuilding the entire engine from scratch in Agadez: meeting gorillas, lions and snakes on the road, staying in African villages and meeting an amazing variety of friendly and helpful people. Not to mention having an accident in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) with the only car seen on the road. This second edition contains rather more information on the life of Theresa Wallach and especially her travels in the USA after here amazing journey to Cape Town. It also contains a few additional photos and where new information has come to light this has also been included.

The Rugged Road Reviews

Of the many moto-adventures I have enjoyed, none stands out like Theresa Wallach's super excellent The Rugged Road Miles Davis in Walnecks's June 2006 The courage and confidence of these most unusual women make this story well worth reading. WOW - Women on Wheels ... a damned good read, and a tribute to women, to motorcyclists, and to adventure. Rider Theresa and Florence's fantastic adventure will hold your attention for hours. The Antique Motorcycle ... a fascinating read. Vintage Motor Cycle The book is beautifully produced ... an amazing video. WIMA This is pure English eccentricity allied to serious resolve. Street Biker I was just in awe of the whole thing. Old Bike Mart

About Theresa Wallach

Theresa Wallach is one of only three women ever to exceed 100mph at Brooklands. She held a degree in engineering from University College London, travelled alone all through the USA by motorcycle, started a business importing British motorcycles into the USA and eventually 'retired' to Phoenix, Arizona where she opened a school to teach motorcyclists how to ride properly and safely. To drive this message home she also wrote a well known book 'Easy Motorcycle Riding'. Theresa Wallach died on her 90th birthday in 1998.
