Stein Summary

Stein: Move by Move by Thomas Engquvist

Leonid Stein was a three-time Soviet Chess Champion and one of the World's strongest players during his career, which was tragically cut short at its peak by his premature death in 1973. Stein was a fierce competitor who defeated virtually all of his closest rivals and enjoyed excellent results even against World Champions. Stein possessed a unique creative attacking style, and his legacy includes a number of wonderful attacking games. In this book, International Master Thomas Engqvist invites readers to join him in a study of his favorite Stein games, and shows how we can all improve by learning from Stein's masterpieces. Move by Move provides an ideal platform to study chess. By continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the learning and practicing of vital skills just as much as the traditional assimilation of knowledge. Carefully selected questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an excellent way to improve your chess skills and knowledge.

Stein Reviews

Stein Move by Move is different than other game collections in the Move by Move series. First, the introduction is much lengthier than normal and features many interesting observations about Stein, particularly regarding his playing style. Second the games in this book are arranged chronologically rather than by theme which is the Everyman standard. In this case the deviation was a good idea as it is interesting to trace Stein's development as a player. The 60 games in this close to 500 page tome are well-annotated and players of all levels will appreciate them those with FIDE titles. This is the definitive Stein book. Highly Recommended -- John Donaldson, International master, International Master www.JeremySilman.com
